Title: Firewall(s). O elemento fogo nos processos construtivos da muralha do Bronze Final do Outeiro do Circo (Beja)
Authors: Serra, Miguel; Porfírio, Eduardo; Silva, Sofia; Soares, Sofia; Barreira, João; Almeida, Nelson; Castro, Fernando
Abstract: Outeiro do Circo (Beja) is mainly known for the characteristics of its defensive system, in which the use of fire played an important role during its construction, particularly to stabilise the slope and to create a clay ramp. The main material traces of this type of action are the numerous blocks of burnt clay identified on the surface or excavated in the area of the walls. In order to better understand this phenomenon, various archaeological techniques and methods were used, including photo-interpretation, survey trenches, archaeological and geophysical prospection, as well as laboratory analyses
and zooarchaeological approaches with a taphonomic nature. Finally, some aspects of the use of fire at Outeiro do Circo are contextualised with other cases already published
for the Late Bronze Age communities of the Alentejo.

Authors: Almeida, Nelson; Guinot, Catarina; Diniz, António
Abstract: We review published taphonomical information on Neolithic and Chalcolithic faunas from central and Southern
Portugal. The aim is to make an initial approach to macrofauna butchering and consumption practices, specifi-
cally in caprine, swine, cervids, bovine and equids. Taxonomically undetermined remains are also considered
when information is available, since it may help to characterise taphonomic stories. Variables under analysis
are the presence of cutmarks, anthropic breakage indicators, thermal alteration (fire, boiling), tooth marks and
related indicators. Although available information is unequal some preliminary considerations on these topics
are discussed.

Authors: Serra, Miguel; Porfírio, Eduardo; Almeida, Nelson; Silva, Sofia; Soares, Sofia
Abstract: In the region surrounding the Late Bronze Age settlement of Outeiro do Circo, agriculture and livestock have always shaped the rhythms of human activity. Currently, the
landscape of the vast plain that surrounds this archaeological site is experiencing a major transformation, with the installation of intensive monocultures and the decline of the traditional cereal fields, the cork oak groves, the mediterranean forests and the riparian woods. 3,000 years ago, this territory enabled the installation of an agricultural system that allowed the consolidation of a community capable of building the complex walls that characterize Outeiro do Circo, one of the largest settlements known in Southwest Iberia during the Late Bronze Age. This paper presents the archaeological
evidence collected in Outeiro do Circo related to the agricultural and hunting practices of its inhabitants during the Late Bronze Age.

Title: – El Castillo de Alferce (Monchique, Portugal): una fortificación califal del Garb al-Andalus
Authors: Gómez-Martínez, Susana; CAPELA, Fabio; VERISIMO, Humberto
Abstract: The archaeological site of Cerro do Castelo de Alferce has been the subject of systematic archaeological
interventions since 2020, framed within the research project “From Recent Prehistory to Islamic Medieval:
ancient human occupations in Cerro do Castelo de Alferce”. The fieldwork has focused particularly on the summit
of the site, where two fortified enclosures from the Umayyad period are located. One of them corresponds to the
upper redoubt, a fortification from the Caliphal period, erected in the late 10th or early 11th century. This arose
after the deactivation of a fortified settlement from the Emirate period, possibly related to Munt Šāqir of the kūra
of Ocsonoba. Recent archaeological interventions have allowed for the identification of new architectural and
defensive elements of the Caliphal fortification, some of which result from the utilization of earlier structures.
