Abstract: Museums, perceived as trusted institutions, have significant potential for fostering
public understanding of climate change. This study examines the integration
of climate narratives in the permanent exhibitions of five Nordic national
museums. The analyses focused on human-climate relations and the museums’
role as societal reflection and change agents. Despite the growing academic
emphasis on the importance of climate narratives in museum exhibitions, the
analysis reveals that such narratives were scarce in the studied museums. When
present, the narratives were fragmented, isolated themes rather than cohesive
and integrated elements of historical storytelling. Additionally, this study explores
barriers that prevent the integration of climate narratives in permanent
exhibitions and proposes practical curatorial strategies for reframing existing
historical narratives. The strategies aim to inspire collective action and critical
engagement that position national museums as dynamic platforms for addressing
climate challenges. Finally, the article highlights the necessity for curatorial
practices to evolve and integrate inclusive and forward-looking narratives that
empower audiences to confront the climate crisis.

Abstract: In 2025, the PHONLAB R&D project team will create a permanent exhibition at the University of Coimbra dedicated to the phonetician Armando de Lacerda (1902-1984) and the Experimental Phonetics Laboratory of the Faculty of Letters (1936-1979). The exhibition is the result of a joint effort by
the Institute of Contemporary History, the Foundation for Science and Technology, the Rectory of the University of Coimbra, the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra, and the Faculty of Letters of Coimbra. This paper reports on the curatorial process and the scientific content that will be on
display, organised into the following four sections: 1) Lacerda's pioneering
work, 2) the work of the Coimbra phonetics laboratory, 3) the laboratory's
collaborators, and 4) the creation of a sound archive of Portuguese regional varieties. The realisation of the exhibition presupposes a profound change in how the University of Coimbra perceives and promotes itself, as well as its scientific spaces and personnel. Due to open in November 2025 in the space
formerly occupied by the phonetics laboratory at the Faculty of Letters — in a corridor to be named the Armando de Lacerda Wing — the exhibition will be permanent and bilingual, and will be open to the public free of charge. It is hoped that it will promote public interest in the history of experimental phonetics.

Science diplomacy in a climate of nationalism: archaeology in Portugal between the World Wars

Authors: Lopes, Quintino; Salgueiro, Ângela; Pereira, Elisabete
Editors: Miret, Marició; March, Eva; Castelao, Jose-Miguel; Puig, Albert
Abstract: The National Education Board (Junta de Educação Nacional, JEN), established in
1929, enabled Portugal to play a role in the European and American drive to create scientific planning and funding institutions after the First World War, enhancing the importance of the Portuguese scientific community as an agent of science
diplomacy and soft power. This chapter shows that JEN funding facilitated the participation of Portuguese scientists, researchers and professors in both formal and
informal international science networks and enabled them to establish relationships
with peers and persons in positions of power, thereby enhancing the role of science
in diplomacy and international relations during the postwar period.
