(In)materialidades na tradição e devoção populares: o Cante ao Menino no Natal de Elvas

Abstract

A presente dissertação estuda a prática de Cante ao Menino no Natal de Elvas. A investigação foca-se na interligação entre as expressões imateriais e materiais, analisando a evolução histórica da tradição desde o século XVIII até à atualidade. Por outro lado, é explorada a materialidade da ronca, detalhando a sua estrutura e as técnicas de saber-fazer enraizadas no quadro cultural de Elvas. O instrumento é apresentado pela sua influência no comportamento social e na celebração ritual dos elvenses. Estes dois elementos não apenas são transmitidos através de saberes geracionais e da memória coletiva, como ainda denotam influência além-fronteiras. A metodologia qualitativa recorre ainda ao método etnográfico, utilizando entrevistas a agentes locais e questionários à comunidade. O objetivo central da dissertação é compreender a função da ronca como catalisadora do cante devocional natalício e da identidade elvense. Apresenta-se, no final do trabalho, uma proposta de valorização patrimonial para o Museu de Arqueologia e Etnografia António Tomás Pires, em Elvas criando um Núcleo Expositivo centrado na temática trabalhada na dissertação; - (In)tangibilities in popular and devotional tradition: Cante ao Menino in Elvas Christmas - Abstract: This dissertation studies the practice of "Cante ao Menino" (Singing to the Child) at Christmas in Elvas. The research focuses on the interconnection between immaterial and material expressions, analyzing the historical evolution of the tradition from the 18th century to the present. On the other hand, it explores the materiality of the "ronca" (a type of traditional instrument), detailing its structure and the know-how techniques rooted in the cultural framework of Elvas. The instrument is presented through its influence on the social behavior and ritual celebration of the people of Elvas. These two elements are not only transmitted through generational knowledge and collective memory but also denote influence beyond borders. The methodology, qualitative in nature, also uses the ethnographic method, employing interviews with local agents and questionnaires administered to the community. The central objective of the dissertation is to understand the function of the "ronca" as a catalyst for devotional Christmas singing and Elvas identity. Finally, this work presents a proposal for the enhancement of the heritage of the António Tomás Pires Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography in Elvas, creating an Exhibition Center focused on the theme explored in the dissertation.
