Percurso dos corpi santi: entre a escuridão das catacumbas e a luz do presente

Abstract

Os corpi santi, ossos exumados das catacumbas de Roma, foram, entre os séculos XVI e XIX, um fenómeno religioso transnacional. Em Portugal, constituem um caso singular do património religioso, cuja investigação se intensificou na última década. Este artigo analisa as origens, exumação e distribuição destes relicários de corpo inteiro (simulacra), que evoluíram de composições esqueléticas para modelações mais realistas. Com o declínio da devoção, muitos foram abandonados ou ocultados, sobrevivendo hoje como testemunhos fundamentais para a compreensão das dinâmicas religiosas da época. The corpi santi, skeletal remains exhumed from the Roman catacombs, constituted a widespread religious phenomenon from the 16th to the 19th centuries. In Portugal, they represent a singular case, whose study has made significant advances over the past decade. This work examines the origins, exhumation and distribution of these full-body reliquaries (simulacra), which evolved from compositions with visible bones to more lifelike models. As devotion declined, many were abandoned or hidden. Today, they serve as crucial testimonies for understanding the religious dynamics of that period.
