Abstract: This thesis focuses on the catadromous thin-lipped grey mullet Chelon ramada, to understand its migratory strategies, adaptive benefits of freshwater habitat use, and implications for the species’ population structure. A multidisciplinary approach was employed, combining molecular markers, biotelemetry (acoustic and PIT tags), otolith microchemistry, and fatty acid profiles. Findings revealed a metapopulation structure, with Portuguese populations playing a key role in maintaining gene flow and connectivity between the Mediterranean and North Atlantic regions. Strong interannual fidelity to freshwater habitats was observed, and length distribution, seasonal movements, and the environmental triggers of migration were characterized. Otolith microchemistry and biotelemetry provided the first evidence of discrete migratory strategies within a single population, supporting facultative reproduction, in a fraction of the population. The reconstruction of ontogenic habitat use revealed the existence of freshwater irregular spawners, estuarine regular or irregular spawners, and marine frequent spawners. Fine-scale movement analysis identified three distinct behavioural profiles: long-term residents within a single habitat type (estuarine brackish waters, freshwater with tidal influence, and freshwater); directional migrants transitioning between zones; and irregular commuters with wide-ranging movements. The trophic migration into freshwater confers adaptive advantages, including higher body condition, greater muscle energy, and larger gonads with higher lipid reserves. A mismatch between the metabolic omega-3 pathway and maturity stages suggests a dormancy-like phenomenon linked to this flexible reproductive strategy. These results challenge the traditional view of C. ramada as strictly catadromous, revealing a broader spectrum of migratory behaviours. Freshwater use appears to support a reproductive strategy that enables adults to exploit warm, food-rich periods, optimizing spawning timing. By maintaining diverse habitat-use patterns, the species buffers against stochastic events that might compromise recruitment or stock stability.
